Manda Bay

Manda Bay is a rustic beach hideaway found on an idyllic island within Kenya's Lamu Archipelago. Accessed only by speedboat, Manda Bay lies on the remote north western tip of Manda Island, on the Kenyan coast. This friendly owner-run lodge offers wonderful beach front accommodation, informal pampering and barefoot luxury, superbly combining the bush and beach experience.

Manda Bay’s wood and thatch bandas (cottages) are set amongst coconut palms, acacia and tamarind trees overlooking the sandy beaches and bay. Designed in keeping with the local landscape, the spacious cottages have large driftwood beds draped with mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms and private decks with swing beds, just perfect to relax and watch the dhows sail past.

The main guest areas, set on the headland with superb ocean views, include a bar, dining area and reading room. High roofs, open sides and low overhangs serve to provide guests with a cooling sea breeze, whilst matted floors, low seating and brightly printed throws encourage guests to relax and unwind in a wholly unpretentious atmosphere. The cuisine is widely praised, using the freshest ingredients possible including a wide variety of seafood.

For many Manda Bay is all about relaxation, sitting by the pool with a good book and a cocktail in hand, paddle boarding down the peaceful mangroves, sundowners on board Manda’s traditional dhow boat or walking down the private beach taking in the peace and quiet. For others who wish to be active, there are a host of water activities from windsurfing and sailing to water-skiing and deep sea fishing.  And for those with an interest in culture, Manda Bay is only a short boat ride from the World Heritage Site of Lamu, the oldest Swahili settlement of Islamic culture, dating back to the 13th century, whilst the Takwa Ruins, the oldest recorded on the East African Coast, are within walking distance, surrounded by 100 year old baobab trees.

For families and couples alike, it’s a brilliant spot to kick off your shoes and enjoy the simple beauty in palm thatched cottages, unspoilt beaches and open living spaces.
