Affectionately known as “The Land of a Thousand Hills”, Rwanda may be small, but it has plenty of natural wonders – from unspoilt forests to rolling green hills, lush meadows and picture-perfect lakes.
Being located on the border of the National Park, guests at Singita Kwitonda have quick and easy access to gorilla trekking. Built to blend with it’s surroundings, Singita Kwitonda aims to bring the magnitude of it’s location into the lodge with large, timber framed floor to ceiling glass walls throughout the lodge and it’s suites. Terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans, woven ceilings and the soft fabrics add to this, creating a warm yet dramatic style.
Each of the seven 1-bedroom suites and one 2-bedroom suite has 270 degree views of the volcanoes, indoor and outdoor showers, private heated plunge pool, indoor gas fireplace and outdoor woodfire.
In addition, Kataza House is a 4-bedroom Exclusive Use Villa with the same amenities found in the suites, as well as a cinema room, small wine cellar, fitness centre and open plan kitchen.
As may be expected, the nutrient rich soil is perfect for growing wonderful fruits, vegetables and herbs. The on-site Akarabo Nursery provides key ingredients to the meals prepared at Singita Kwitonda, supported by produce from the local markets. The garden is open to guests to explore or join one of the chefs as they collect ingredients for the day ahead. Fresh, light and healthy menus with a modern take on traditional Rwandan cuisine.
The natural highlight of staying at Singita Kwitonda is the gorilla trekking. A humbling an awe-inspiring experience, spending an hour with these “gentle giants of the forest” observing their movements and interactions. A clever offering is found in the “Gear Room”, where guests can borrow items such as chaps / gators, gloves, waterproof jackets, quick dry hiking trousers, backpacks with waterproof covers and trekking poles.
In addition to gorilla trekking, guests can visit Dian Fossey’s gravesite, enjoy a golden monkey trek, visit the small village of Gasura to meet local crafters or visit the local Musanze caves. Bicycles are available to use at guests leisure and, after what can be a strenuous gorilla hike, arrange a massage in your suite before sitting by the fire, under the stars.
