Azalai Desert Camp
Azalai Desert Camp is a secluded Bedouin camp nestled in the dunes of Erg Chegaga. A perfectly balanced camp combining luxury with Berber tradition, embracing the natural surrounding beauty of the Sahara.
The Azalai Desert Camp is a three hour drive from the desert outpost of Zagora in Southern Morocco.
Seven bone white canvas tents are scattered within the soft desert sands, sensitively built within the environment. Electricity is solar powered, bathrooms have ecological loos and the camp has been built to make the most of the cool breezes that wind between the dunes – the perfect natural air conditioning.
Internally, beautiful linens have been used to keep things cool with straw mats, Berber rugs, antique travelling trunks, papillon armchairs and soft shades. King-sized wrought-iron beds with the comfiest of mattresses face out onto the endless space and silence of one of the world’s largest deserts. Battery operated lanterns light the tents and the en suite bathroom is fitted with a basin, hot shower (water is heated on request) and an ecological loo.
Being in the desert is all about spending time in the dunes. Following the wind sculpted sand dunes crests on the back of a camel or on foot, playing some golf on the Azalai make-shift course or enjoy a desert picnic with cosy blankets and plump cushions. As the sun starts to set, learn the art of enjoying Moroccan mint tea – a fundamental part of Berber culture.
Dinner is served by candlelight and can be enjoyed in the lounge tent or privately in your very own “open air dining room” by your tent. The cuisine is excellent, a four course Moroccan menu with French fusion. Whilst alcohol is not available, guests can bring their own supply which we can help arrange.
After dinner, the theatre of the sky takes centre stage as guests sit by the crackling fire or retire early to their tent to enjoy the sensational spectacle.
