Ol Malo

Ol Malo is a privately-owned game sanctuary on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in Kenya's North Eastern Province – 5000 acres of spectacular bush country overlooked by Mount Kenya and teeming with the elusive antelope from which the land takes its name.

Built, owned and managed by the Francombe family, with the help of the Samburu people, Ol Malo has established a reputation in the world of eco-tourism that far exceeds its modest size and is a result of the Francombe family’s commitment to personal service and attention to detail. For just a handful of guests at a time, Ol Malo offers the perfect mix of comfort, luxury and life in harmony with nature.

Ol Malo is a striking lodge in an outstanding location – natural local materials sculpted into a warm and hospitable lodge set among the curves of a rocky hillside surveying one of the great views of the world.  Comfortable sitting and dining rooms provide shady terraces for protection from the sun, and open fireplaces for the cooler evenings. Smooth lawns and carefully tended shrubberies sweep down to a cliff edge, providing a vantage point for activity at the watering hole and salt lick below. An infinity pool adds to the beauty as well as the amenity of this place.

A maze of slated pathways wind down to four rock and olive wood cottages. Large picture windows frame a wild, constantly changing landscape and each cottage has its own veranda and complete privacy. Ten minutes away you’ll find Ol Malo House, a separate entity, ideally suited to family groups. Ol Malo House has six beautiful guest rooms and cottages, which can be taken by two families or on an exclusive use basis.

To stay at Ol Malo is to live by a different rhythm – measure the day by the timeworn patterns of nature.  Wake up to see the awe inspiring sunrise framing the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. Celebrate the new day with a dawn horse ride, game drive or nature walk into the wilderness to view the animals as they wake. Feel the night’s chill burn off with the rising of the sun while enjoying a bush breakfast. Keep the tempo of the world by the roll of the camel’s stride, or scramble over the hilly terrain on a mountain bike. Visit the colourful Samburu nomads and the Ol Malo Trust projects for unique and educational experiences. At night luxuriate in the peace and comfort of Ol Malo and tune into the magical sounds of wild Africa while dining under an ancient star scape.

Adventurers can also spend a night under the stars in the tree house, in the leopard hide with floodlit views of the water hole, or fly camping on the river with camels or horses, helping with the bush cooking and escaping reality.
