Borana Lodge
Borana Lodge is world-renowned for being at the forefront of Kenya’s wildlife conservation efforts. Located at the heart of 32,000 acre Borana Conservancy, Kenya’s newest and most successful rhino sanctuary, Borana Lodge lies at the foot of Mount Kenya, with an organic design and panoramic views over the Samangua Valley Plateau.
Owned by the Dyers, a third generation white Kenyan family, Borana has always been a working ranch since its conception in 1990. The main lodge, built of thatch and wood by local artisans, has enormous front windows with superb views across the valley, and houses the communal guests areas, including the dining room, lounge and bar. The separate pool house serves as a second dining area, with it beautiful free-form swimming pool.
Eight thatched cottages surround the main lodge, thoughtfully positioned to make the very best of the views and give privacy to guests. Each cottage has an unique layout, yet never forgetting the finer details which make for true comfort. Two of the cottages provide the perfect refuge for families. With a sitting room shared between a double and a twin, parents can rest assured that their children are safe in the room next door.
The Borana conservancy introduced black rhino in 2013 and the population has since thrived. In 2014, Borana Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to the East, took down their fences to form The Lewa-Borana Landscape, allowing the wildlife free reign on 92,000 acres of unspoilt African wilderness. The Lewa-Borana Landscape is a Key One Rhino population, one of only three in Kenya, home to over 100 black rhino and 92 white rhino: 14% of Kenya’s rhino population.
With two strings of safari horses, rhino tracking, mountain bikes, an abundance of birds, cross-cultural experiences and plenty of excuses for meals and nights in the bush there is never a dull moment at Borana Lodge. Whatever the activity, whatever the interest, visitor feedback is excellent, and the level of guiding is considered to be up there with the best in Africa. Topped off with an in house Safari Spa, there is something for everybody.
Borana Lodge is a Long Run destination, these are carefully selected for their commitment to the relationship between the 4C’s; community, culture, conservation and commerce.
