Gal Oya Lodge

A charming boutique eco lodge within a 20-acre private forest, home to expert rangers, outstanding views and fascinating wildlife.

Nestled in a protected jungle on the fringe of Gal Oya National Park, Gal Oya Lodge is perfectly suited for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature, soak up local culture and explore the rich wildlife of one of Sri Lanka’s most remote and least visited wilderness areas.

Gal Oya Lodge was built using sustainable and local materials wherever possible and, perched at the highest point of the property, are eight thatched one-bedroom and one two bedroom bungalows. Each has been built to frame the best possible views with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors that open onto a private veranda. Each one-bedroom bungalow is a generous 800ft², with a private living room, built-in king-size bed, and an adjoining alfresco bathroom. The two bedroom villa consists of one king-size four-poster bedroom and a twin room. Each bedroom has its own wraparound veranda with wide views over the canopy and an indoor-outdoor en-suite bathroom.

The main lodge has a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool, all carefully integrated into the surrounding landscape.

The team have created unique guided experiences that re-imagine the traditional Sri Lanka safari. With one of the lodge’s expert naturalists, guests can take a boat safari on Sri Lanka’s largest lake and discover wildlife from a whole new perspective. If lucky, there is a chance to see elephants swimming between islands or bathing at the lake’s edge. Birdlife is exceptional on the lake, and migratory birds swell their ranks during the months of December to April. The lodge also offers jeep safaris, bicycle tours, bird walks, a jungle cooking course, mountain treks, and amazing stargazing opportunities.

The local village is one of the last remaining communities of the Vedda people. The village chief can take guests on walks through the jungles of his ancestors. The forest comes alive as he explains uses for medicinal plants, locations of ancient hunting grounds and cave dwellings, and how hunter-gatherers sustained themselves in the ancient jungles of Gal Oya.
