La Maison Bleue & The Riad
Two properties located within the old Medina walls of the ancient city of Fes where timeless Moroccan architecture meets modern minimalistic design.
La Maison Bleue and The Riad: two distinctly different properties within the old city of Fes, offering the warm hospitality of the El Abbadi family. With 45 rooms and suites between them, each uniquely designed with period antiques, hand-picked furnishing and the finest quality linen.
La Maison Bleue: Built in 1915 by Sidi Mohammed El Abbadi, a famous judge and astrologer of his time. Today his grandchildren keep the spirit of the house alive by opening it to guests. Located in the heart of the old Medina, La Maison Bleue is an opulent oasis tucked away from the bustling markets and cobbled streets. The architecture of the house is typically Fassi; the walls are covered with intricate zelij mosaic tiling; blue symbolising the ancient city and pale green symbolising the peaceful colours of Islam. Once you have crossed the threshold, a long corridor leads to a courtyard surrounded by three Moroccan ‘salons’. On the first and second floors the deluxe rooms are filled with authentic Moroccan antiquities creating a palatial space for you to relax. Each suite comes equipped with an ensuite bathroom, telephone, television, internet access, air conditioning, mini-bar, iPod dock and safe.
Guests also have access to a unique library, which belonged to the late head of the family. Full of oil paintings, beautifully bound books and letters written in perfect calligraphy, browsing here will give you a glimpse into the knowledge of the past.
The Riad: Located closer to the outer walls of the medina, home to 18 rooms and suites, the Riad was renovated from ruins in the 1900’s. Like many traditional riads, the Riad is a combination of three interconnecting houses with stylish, modern maternities within a traditional building reflecting the ancient media of Fes. Interconnecting courtyards make up the ground floor, creating intimate nooks to relax and enjoy with friends and family. Due to this, the Riad can be separated into small Exclusive Use options for groups wanting private accommodation. Home to a Andalucian patio garden, swimming pool, Spa and Hammam using traditional treatment methods to revive and rejuvenate – the Riad exudes an aura of discrete yet sophisticated luxury.
A combination of Western and Oriental flavours can be enjoy in the restaurants of either properties in one of the secluded courtyards or on the roof terraces overlooking the ivory white city of Fes. Feast on slow-cooked beef or chicken tagines, fluffy couscous with raisins and flaky almond-stuffed pastilla all served by waiters in traditional costume and accompanied by Andalucian and Gnaoua musicians. Uniquely, The Riad is home to The Maison Bleue Culinary School, a first of it’s kind in Fes. Guests can learn to prepare, cook and taste some of Morocco’s favourite dishes using fresh, local ingredients.
