Mandrare River Camp

Nestled on the banks of the Mandrare River, Mandrare River Camp is a beautiful, first-rate eco-camp. Located in the remote and diverse south east, the camp is the perfect base to explore this wild part of Madagascar in pristine isolation.

Mandrare River Camp affords magnificent views over the neighbouring rugged, sacred mountains. Seven luxury en-suite tents blend into the surrounding bush, generously spread out along the river in the shade of Tamarind trees. Each ensuite, spacious tent has its own private deck with views across the tranquil water. An open air lounge on a raised platform is the perfect spot to enjoy a G&T as you reflect on the day just past and leads down to a refreshing pool with with inviting hammocks suspended in quiet spots around camp. Each morning the calls of the Coucal and Crested Coua gently welcome a new day and, in the distance, the sound of the local tribe singing as they fetch water from the river can be heard.

The seclusion of the camp affords intimate access and insight to the spiny forest; home to an abundance of unique wildlife and the fascinating Antandroy tribe ” The People of the Thorns”, that inhabits this arid and otherworldly landscape. The vast canopies of the surrounding forests are home to a wide diversity of wildlife including inquisitive groups of Ring-tailed Lemurs and ever entertaining Verreaux’s Sifaka. Venturing out on night walks uncovers wonderful nocturnal inhabitants such as white-footed sportive lemurs and chameleons.

In order to reduce the camp’s carbon footprint, all electricity and hot water is generated by solar energy and all food is locally sourced. Through levies and fees, the camp also contributes towards local schools, forest conservation and local infrastructure where the Mandrare River Camp team and their families are from.
