Muang La Lodge
More than just a hotel, Muang La Lodge was created by its French-Lao owners to offer a unique experience in the north of Laos as well as to involve the local village in the daily life of the Lodge.
Driven by the desire to explore the jungle beyond the Mekong and to discover the curious ethnic minorities of Northern Laos, the owners of Muang La Lodge were in search of a site, far removed from the well-trodden tourist trails. In 2008 their travels brought them to the village of Muang La, where they put down their maps and set up camp on the banks of the Nam Pak River. From that moment, they knew they had found the perfect place to create a unique experience at a crossroad between Burma, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
Offering an unexpected level of comfort in a remote corner of northern Laos, Muang La Lodge uses its bi-cultural origins to offer an experience rich in tradition and customs. An absolute must for connoisseurs of travel who wish to explore the more remote parts of SE Asia.
In a remote, secluded valley, the delights of a stay at Muang La Lodge are in the no frills joy of total relaxation and tranquillity. Ten rooms are tucked into the tropical gardens, each designed with local wood treated with fragrant essential oils, white walls, polished parquet floors and furniture from the 1930’s reproduced by the local craftsmen of Oudom Xay. All the rooms have a private terrace with a view over the garden or the river and the thermal spring. The decor of the hotel and rooms includes original works of art from Lao artists, both painted and sculpted. All the fabrics are locally produced and a tribute to the colourful cultures of Laos and the ethnic communities of the region.
Ideal for a digital detox the rooms are not equipped with TV, internet or phones while comfort is a priority with fans and air-conditioning in addition to shower or bathrooms decorated in wood, granite and tinted stone.
The lodges sala on the river bank, is accessed by a pretty bridge of rope and bamboo which crosses the river to a private island where there is also a pool. The Sala is the perfect place to take lunch, enjoy a herbal tea, a massage or share an aperitif. But it comes into its own at sunset, adorned with lanterns and candles, and bathing in the warm colours of the setting sun.
