Old Mondoro

A hidden gem on the banks of the Zambezi River in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Authentic in nature, Old Mondoro provides a spring board for guests to experience exceptional game viewing, led by a leading team of award winning guides.

With only five bush chalets, Old Mondoro is the little sister camp of Chiawa Camp, hidden deep within the Lower Zambezi National Park. Here the concept is simple, to provide guests with an authentic and unedited Zambian safari, with plenty of subtle creature comforts. The focus is on wildlife and the wilderness experience, making it a safari lovers paradise. If you were to only safari once, this camp should come into consideration.

Under a canopy of winterthorn trees and located along the Zambezi Rivers, your first wildlife sighting every morning will be from your chalet. It may be an elephant gently picking pods, hippo wallowing, waterbuck, baboon on patrol or even buffalo. Within each bush chalet, is a romantically netted king bed (or twins) with views over the river and it’s islands or neighbouring channel. An outdoor bath doubles as a plunge pool and open air shower allows one to revel under the stars each night. A shaded private deck is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon for a siesta or read a book – a pair of binoculars should never be far from reach though. No WIFI enables guests to truly disconnect from their every day lives whilst the bush chalets enjoy 24/7 solar power with numerous charging points for cameras and batteries.

The mess area is an open sided sitenje looking out over the river at the front and open bush to the back with a soft lounge area and dining area. Meals are mostly enjoyed on the river bank, where breakfast is cooked on the open fire, and dinner is set up surrounded in lanterns and lit by candle under the open skies.

Safari experiences here are plentiful and completely flexible. With world glass safari guides leading specialist safari walks, 4×4 safari, canoeing and boating expeditions, guests at Old Mondoro can enjoy a different pace every day. And, if you feel you haven’t been busy enough, the bush gym is available to earn a few points towards afternoon tea. In camp, life is simple with a beautiful pool and a natural theatre to watch as wildlife enjoys their every day routine. Nothing at Old Mondoro has been left to chance and the seamless excellence of this camp ensures guests come back year on year.
