Onguma The Fort

Onguma The Fort is the most luxurious lodge within Onguma Private Nature Reserve, along the eastern border of Etosha National Park. Entirely unique and boasting probably the finest sunset views in Namibia, this 13 suite lodge combines a classical African feel with strong Moroccan and Indian flavours, characterised by Arabesque water features, beautiful courtyards and oversized antique windows and doors.

Surrounded by camelthorn trees and overlooking the dramatic sparseness of the Etosha Pans, Onguma the Fort features 11 Bush Suites and one Honeymoon Suite situated adjacent to the Main Fort. Suites are set 50 metres apart to ensure privacy, each with a bedroom, dressing area and spacious bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower. There is air-conditioning for those hot summer days, plus an open log fire to warm you at night, and each Suite opens out onto the plains, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing natural light and a view from your bed. Your own private deck includes sun loungers on which to relax and drink in the extraordinary view. The one and only Sultan Suite is found in the Main Tower and offers similar facilities on an even grander scale.

The shared areas at The Fort include a lounge, dining area, bar and a beautiful swimming pool. Guests can enjoy magnificent views from the tower and the large deck off the lounge area overlooks a waterhole, extremely popular with resident wildlife. Service is personal and the food is delicious with a varied menu, not to mention the massage therapist on site for that extra bit of pampering.

Onguma Nature Reserve has over 20,000 hectares of protected land and wildlife and boasts over thirty different animal species, including a family of black rhino. There are also other accommodation options within the Reserve, which include Onguma Tented Camp, ideal for those looking for a luxury stay under canvas, or Onguma Tree Top, with just four stilted rooms, and a more down to earth rustic vibe.

Activities at Onguma revolve around game drives in the reserve and also into nearby Etosha National Park. There is also the opportunity to experience the sights, smells and sounds of the Namibian bush on an early morning leisurely walk accompanied by an experienced armed ranger. The Onkolo Hide, Onguma’s fabulous new water-level hide, affords guests a great opportunity to calmly sit and enjoy nature unobserved. Amateur and professional photographers alike love the angles and light from this equipped hide.

The sunset from Onguma The Fort is arguably the finest in the whole of Namibia.
