The Last House

Designed by legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa, and set on tranquil Mawella Beach, The Last House is an iconic five-bedroom seaside hideaway. Relaxed and colourful, it is the epitomy of barefoot chic, where airy antique-filled interiors spill into alfresco spaces.

As Geoffrey Bower’s final commission, the Last House is a true representation of his work, designed as if no boundaries exist at all. Decor throughout the property is a mix of fresh white walls and grey polished cement floors, serving as a backdrop to a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture, art and fabrics for a contemporary, colourful and cool design.

There are five individually designed air-conditioned double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and views of the sea. These can be booked by the room or the entire house can be taken on an exclusive-use basis for families or friends travelling together.

The food at The Last House is some of Sri Lanka‘s finest, and everything is prepared from scratch with fresh local flavours: think prawn and mango salad, grilled squid, and seared tuna with lime-ginger dressing, as well as the renowned Sri Lankan crab curry.

Set within a frangipani-fringed courtyard, the pool is surrounded by sunbed-topped lawns with views to the jungle beyond, and the beautiful beach is one of the South Coast’s last remaining undeveloped coves.  There is plenty to keep everyone entertained with beach games, surfing or body boarding, massage treatments or leisurely croquet on the lawn

Further afield, you are within reach are UNESCO heritage sites, cave temples, the country’s most diverse bird sanctuary, blue whales and a golf course.
