White Desert

Follow the footsteps of polar explorers, scientists and researchers into the interior of Antarctica. A pioneering and life-affirming experience, all those who travel here return as Antarctic Ambassadors with a new perception of the world.

Why should this incredible part of the world only be seen by scientists, researchers and a few adventurers? This was the thought of polar explorers, husband and wife duo, Patrick and Robyn Woodhead as they crossed 1,850kms of Antarctica.

With the aim of creating a positive impact on Antarctica’s future, White Desert was created with environmentally conscious principles at its core. Founded in 2005, it is the first, and only, operator flying private charters from Cape Town to Antarctica with 3 luxury camps and an overnight base at the South Pole.

Each luxury camp hosts up to 12 people, each with their own character, and are built to the highest of standards. Guests are looked after by expert polar explorers and top chefs from Cape Town.

With an almost incomprehensible amount of pristine vista around you, with dramatic mountain ranges and unique wildlife encounters, guests entering inner Antarctica enjoy bucket list experience, led by polar explorer staff, each day. Sauna overlooking the glacier, sip cocktails made with 10,000 year old ice, visit the south pole, ice climb and abseil, hike over ice waves, cycle the vast ice plains hike the Antarctic summit and be one of the very few to come face-to-face with 28,000 Emperor penguins.

White Desert offers a handful of itineraries, starting and ending in Cape Town and operates in the summer months of mid November to early February when there is 24hr light.

The Antarctica, the coldest, windiest, driest and highest-altitude continent on earth with no native human population. Almost entirely covered by ice and home to 80% of the world’s fresh water, yet no rain has fallen in Antarctica for more than two million years. Once you reach the South Pole there is no more East, South or West, only North. And you will be able to walk around the world in just a few paces! Perhaps the biggest bucket list experience on this planet.
