Kaya Mawa
Translated as "Maybe tomorrow" in the local dialect, the lodge uses the stunning natural surroundings to create an idyllic island lodge of unique character and imagination with a very special ambiance.
Kaya Mawa sits in a pretty bay on Likoma Island, located half way up Lake Malawi close to the Mozambique mainland, covered with mango trees and ancient baobabs, encircled by glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves. It has been rated by Condé Nast Magazine as one of the planet’s ten most romantic destinations in the world.
There are eleven rooms, spread out around two beaches and a rocky knoll, all offering spectacular views over the lake with understated simple yet elegantly designed rooms. Rooms enjoy ensuite bathrooms, private terraces, direct access to the glistening waters of Lake Malawi or their own private plunge pools. Families will also find a special place here, with fantastic facilities for activities and various family room options. The bar & restaurant are just metres from the water’s edge. If you feel like a change of scene from the restaurant then there are many unique private areas for dinners to be served – on a beach, deck, platform or under a gazebo.
In addition to the rooms Kaya Mawa boasts Nodomo House, the ultimate in exclusivity, unique design and privacy. Located approximately 1 km away from the main lodge on the south-west corner of the lake, the property boasts uninterrupted views across the lake. Activities don’t just revolve around the lake. Walking, biking or even taking a quad tour around the island is a must and the local population is legendary for its friendliness. En route you can engage the locals in conversation and visit the cathedral, local school and the lively market nearby.
Kaya Mawa is a PADI accredited dive centre, with two in house PADI dive instructors, a qualified sailing instructor, plus a water-ski instructor. With some of the best fresh water diving in the world and some 11 recognised dive sites nearby it really is a diver’s paradise. Three boats are also available for wakeboarding, water-skiing and knee boarding. Kayaking, windsurfing and sailing are also a superb way to get out on the lake. The waters around the lodge are both safe and clear (free of hippos) and swimming and snorkelling are on offer – some of the best fresh water snorkelling in the world is right here with over 1,500 species of fish to be discovered.
