All guestrooms at Royal Madikwe are beautifully appointed, extending out onto private decks with plunge pools. The interiors are elegant Afro-chic with four-poster beds, dark wood floors and carvings, high thatched ceilings and fireplaces for chilly evenings.

The attractive Clubhouse at Royal Madikwe is thatch and stone, with a sophisticated natural ambience, sumptuous cream leather sofas and wood furnishings with a single dark-wood table for communal dining. Outdoors, elevated decks on different levels make the most of views of the waterhole – there’s almost always something to see, from common impalas to rare rhinos.

Dawn and dusk game drives are the best way to enjoy the areas superb Big Five wildlife, or there are options for guided bush walks, as well as cultural experiences such as learning the art of traditional drumming and Zulu dancing. British owners Chai and Katherine Patel work closely with local communities: 20 per cent of their profits support education and healthcare. Royal Madikwe welcomes children, with activities including bush bumbles, face painting and African story-telling.
