The Oyster Box

Standing proud on Umhlanga’s beachfront, a pretty suburb of Durban, The Oyster Box first opened its doors way back in 1947. The combination of colonial charm, impeccable service, lush tropical gardens and breath-taking coastal setting quickly earned it a fantastic reputation.

The Oyster Box has 86 guest rooms beautifully decorated in a beach chic style reflecting the surrounding area. These range from Classic Rooms overlooking the gardens or ocean and Villas set with the tropical gardens with their own plunge pool, to Deluxe Suites with their own deck and plunge pool with superb ocean views. The hotel is great for children and there are many accommodation options for families.

Fully renovated in 2009, the Oyster Box still evokes the nostalgia of days gone by, sympathetically enhanced with contemporary touches and state-of-the-art facilities. Throughout the hotel, the architecture, décor and the cuisine have all been revised and enhanced. Character designs such as the glass-roofed wine cellar, charming spiral staircase and wide verandas add to the enduring grace of the property, and the heated pool, superb spa and lush tropical gardens ensure ultimate relaxation. The Oyster Box has direct access to the swimming beach as well as a children’s club for youngsters between the ages of four and 12 years.

Choose between fine dining at the Grill Room, bistro-style casual dining at the Ocean Terrace with gorgeous views across the Indian Ocean, or legendary High Tea at the Palm Court. The trendy Lighthouse Bar, with views of the iconic lighthouse, offers live music, delicious light meals and exotic cocktails, whilst the Oyster Bar, overlooking the infinity pool and Indian Ocean, specialises in champagne and oysters freshly harvested from the hotel’s own oyster beds.

The Oyster Box caters brilliantly to both families and couples in equal measure, with its stylish design, array of restaurants, world class facilities and relaxed beach-side charm.
