Just over a century later, the exotic and enthralling country of Myanmar offers travellers a blend of cultural influences and a traditional way of life which prevails after years of isolation following British colonial rule. Here we take a look at our top ten sites and experiences we would recommend when visiting magical Myanmar.
Classics are classics for a reason! Go hot air ballooning over the temples of Bagan.
Take the beautiful train journey to the Golden Rock and the explore the cave networks at Hpa ‘An.
Go kayaking through the floating villages, gardens and markets of Inle Lake.
Take the climb up Mandalay Hill, well worth it for the stunning views of the town and its pagodas and temples. Be sure to also visit the U Bein Bridge, Mandalay Fort and the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens.
Visit the hill town of Kalaw, and experience rural Burma, remember to bring some warm clothes as it is much cooler.
Chill out in the warm waters and long stretches of sand and enjoy the sunsets at Ngapali Beach.
Take a guided walk through Yangon’s Heritage and Secretariat, for an architectural discovery.
Visit the Myeik Archipelego, a beautiful cluster of islands located off the southernmost tip of Myanmar, close to the Thai border.
Take a cultural tour on the Irrawaddy River. The river bisects Myanmar, rising in the Himalayan glaciers and flowing 1,348 miles across the country into the Indian Ocean.
Visit the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, if you visit after dark you can see the jewels at the top sparkling.
